First Person Perspective: A Showcase

By Ingram Team · On March 12, 2019

When looking at creative content, we’re always trying to find something special, unique or a little different. Fortunately we’re lucky enough to have such a wonderful collection of contributors that we’re never short of options. A particular style that has caught our eye recently is First Person Perspective. These images have the power to show a world not just through the lens of a camera, but the photographers eyes. Employing this style of photography does not only give an artistic flair, but also a personal touch that other styles may miss out on.

One key factor that stands this style of photography out from all others is the fact the photographer becomes the subject. Instead of the subject being a separate person or location, the photographer allows the viewer to see the world, event or activity through their eyes. As such, this style of photography lends itself to a very personal experience.

The defining element of a personal experience through first person photo comes from shooting at eye level. By placing the viewpoint at a level people will be familiar with, there comes an instinctual response of connection with the image. This can work for other forms of perspective as well, if a POV shot is looking up at taller subject can really convey a feeling of size, power and gravity. Whereas the inverse can be achieved by shooting an image from above.

As always, there are a few core rules that have a place in any style of photography, such as composition, juxtaposition, and spacing. In particular, juxtaposition is of particular note when shooting First Person shots as it can help convey the message of the photographer. Being aware of position relative to subject will allow the photographer to give that extra flair to their images that really make them shine.
