It’s a new year, and that means new trends, new opportunities and new photography styles. But before we get caught up in 2019, we’d like to take a look back at popular images of 2018. We saw trends ranging from the vibrant colours of neon based imagery, to understated minimalist pastel colour schemes hailing back to the 1950’s and innovative geometric designs. We want to shine a light on our top 5 most popular categories, as decided by our users over the last year.
Starting off in our top 5 most downloaded categories is copy space. Pictures that allow abundant space for designers to work their magic, while also having a backdrop of strong textures or complimentary elements. It is unsurprising that copy space features on our list, given the opportunities that such images can present web and graphic designers to compliment their work.
At number 4, we find icons. Vector images that can be used in wide variety of applications, icons can streamline any project forward. Whether it be a logo design, a promotional graphic or a component of a landing page, vector icons will always find a place in any designers repertoire.
Our third most popular category of 2018 is infographics. Applicable to anyone needing an elaborate or impressive promotional tool, or as part of a report that needs a visual flair, infographics can be used by anyone ranging from a seasoned designer to a junior marketer. This versatility is what makes them so accessible and popular with for large audience.
In second we see cosmic space, a visual representation of life beyond Earth. Images and vectors that represent the view from outer space saw a large uptake over the last year, earning a solid spot in our top 5. Whether it be the sci-fi connotations, plentiful copy space, or the vast expanse that they visualise, we don’t expect to see this trend become any less popular in 2019.
In first place, we have geometric designs. The understated minimalist nature combined with a modern flair make for a clear and popular choice. Being used in a wide range of industries as a prominent website graphic, geometric designs can be seen being employed by leading tech companies to fintech organisations. Given the modern nature of the design style, geometric design can lend itself to modern ideologies and concepts such as cryptocurrency or machine learning, giving it a fast-track to being one of the most applicable design styles of our time.
2018 gave us a collection of creative and invigorating trends, which we hope to see make their way into 2019 as well. But the stock image industry is a fast-changing environment, and with so many new styles and social factors driving the change, we can’t wait to see what the next year has in store.
