Understanding Stock Image Licensing

By Ingimage team · On August 25, 2026

Introduction to Stock Content Licensing

Stock content licensing can be confusing, particularly when terms such as “royalty-free”, “commercial use”, “extended licence” and “editorial use only” are used differently across agencies.

This article explains the most common licensing models used throughout the stock media industry and helps buyers understand:

  • what “royalty-free” actually means;
  • what uses are generally permitted;
  • what uses are typically prohibited;
  • the differences between Standard and Enhanced or Extended licences;
  • why licence prices vary; and
  • common legal risks and misunderstandings.

Important: Licensing terms vary between stock agencies. Always read the specific licence agreement supplied by the content provider.

What does “royalty-free” mean?

Royalty-free does not mean free. You pay once, or acquire content under a subscription, can usually use it multiple times and do not pay additional royalties based on audience size, duration or frequency of use.

Royalty-free licensing differs from Rights Managed licensing, where usage rights are often limited by territory, duration, industry sector, audience size or media type.

Standard licences

The Standard Licence is the most common and least expensive commercial licence offered by stock agencies.

Commonly permitted uses

  • Business websites, blogs and social media
  • Digital advertising, email campaigns and presentations
  • Flyers, brochures, posters, catalogues and annual reports, subject to print-run limits
  • Magazines, newspapers, online articles and educational materials

Common restrictions

  • Print-run limits
  • No resale or redistribution of the original asset
  • No merchandise for resale where the image contributes substantial value
  • No print-on-demand or template-based resale systems

Enhanced or Extended licences

An Extended or Enhanced Licence grants broader usage rights than a Standard Licence. It normally adds unlimited or increased print runs, merchandise for resale, product packaging, commercial templates and certain broadcast or entertainment uses.

The Ingimage difference: Ingimage offers extended-licence usage as standard, with no additional charges or fees.*

*Extended-licence inclusion is a limited promotional offer and may not be repeated.

Uses commonly prohibited under both licences

  • Reselling, giving away or claiming ownership of the original file
  • Uploading the asset to another stock agency
  • Making it available through wallpaper, asset-library, design-resource or free-download sites
  • Fraudulent advertising, defamation, hate speech or promotion of illegal activity

Editorial vs commercial use

Commercial use promotes, markets or sells, including advertising, product packaging, marketing campaigns and corporate websites.

Editorial use informs, comments or reports, including news, journalism, documentaries and educational discussion.

At Ingimage: Ingimage content is licensed for both commercial and editorial use.

Model and property releases

A model release is permission from a person appearing in content. A property release grants permission from the owner of certain private property, such as unique architecture, private homes, artwork or interior spaces.

At Ingimage: All Ingimage content is fully model and property released.

Best practice before licensing stock content

  1. Is the content licensed for commercial use?
  2. Is a model release required?
  3. Is a property release required?
  4. Will I exceed any print-run limits?
  5. Will the content appear on products for resale?
  6. Am I creating a template or downloadable product?
  7. Do I need an Enhanced Licence?
  8. Does my intended use imply endorsement?

Conclusion

For most business uses, including websites, social media, digital advertising, presentations, brochures and general marketing, a Standard Royalty-Free Licence is usually sufficient.

An Enhanced or Extended Licence is typically required when content becomes part of a product being sold, distributed at large scale, incorporated into templates, or used in merchandise and packaging.
